What Kind of Day Review

*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

4/5 stars

What Kind of Day is a story of coincidence or fate if you believe in it. Ben who just lost his job accidentally joins an exclusive tour in the Manila run by Naya. A story that is both told in Naya and Ben's POV in the third person.

What I like about Mina Esguerra's books are that the female main characters are different. In a good way, of course. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it but I guess it's how I can't predict the character's actions even though I somehow know how would the story go. There's also something in her writing that I crave in certain days.

I didn't particularly like field trips to Manila back in my student days because I've always thought what else is there to see, and who likes traffic? People also like going to more touristy parts of the Philippines. But Naya delivered something that made me see and her customers a new side to Manila and I think it was awesome. Another thing I liked was the mention of figure skating because I'm a fan of the sport. It's true it's not big in our country and I only became a fan when Michael Martinez made it to the Sochi Olympics back in 2014. To be honest, I don't know any female Filipino figure skater. The sport is hard, the competition is getting stiffer every year, the good coaches are in abroad, and it's not exactly inexpensive. We don't have ice rinks except in malls and most are in Manila only.
By the way, I saw that there's an ongoing camp with foreign coaches in Cebu right now. When I saw that it's Alina's, 2018 Olympics gold medalist, coach, I thought it would be Eteri. But it's Sergei Dudakov, one of her coaches. I babbled enough about figure skating. But seriously, it was nice that they visited the ice rink and Naya's friend's idea of doing an ice local show was brilliant. I wish it were true. I've always wanted to see an ice show like Stars on Ice that are mostly during off season. It was good for promoting the sports. I'm also waiting for Mina's book about figure skating or maybe it's hockey but I believe it's been on hold for now.

But my favorite of all was that the book exhibited doing what you love and seeing things realistically. I deeply felt Naya's anxiety during her errand day. The book delivered.

Let's not forget the romance and the steamy scenes. But for me, it feels like more of a bonus because the story was so much more. In my opinion, it also wrapped up nicely even though nothing definite was mentioned. I tell you, I had a wide smile when I read that epilogue especially that last scene.

Even though it started a bit slow, What Kind of Day is an easy read that would make you turn the page right after the other. It would give you so much more, hope, love and the right amount of steamy scenes. If you like independent and strong main character, realistic circumstances but still hopeful, or if you're having a bad day with your work/career, pick up What Kind of Day.

Full Description:
It's a bad day for Ben. After years of earnest work, he's been fired from his job as a speechwriter for a Philippine senator. Name tarnished and bridges burned, he steps into what he thinks is a shuttle ride home, and accidentally joins a tour of his own city.

It was supposed to be a good day for Naya. Her passion is traveling, her hobby is discovering cool things to see and do, and taking people on tours of Metro Manila is her only job right now. An extra person at the last minute isn't ideal, especially if the person is a former colleague and the subject of the day's hottest political trash fire. But work is work, and she decides to let him stay in the tour.

She's hoping she won't regret it. He's hoping his day turns around. What kind of day could it be? Maybe the best kind.
